Some Ideas On How to Trap a Mole
It is easy to get frustrated with lawn moles and how to get rid of them. You have probably read many different ways to get rid of lawn moles, but don’t know which way to go with. You may have tried poisons and found that they weren’t strong enough. Perhaps you tried repellants that take their source of food away and found that they ate the food anyway. Or maybe the mole just didn’t mind the ultrasonic sounds that are supposed to annoy or scare them away.
The best way to get rid of lawn moles also happens to be the most humane. Trapping moles not only is the most humane way to get rid of your lawn mole, but it is also the easiest for you to administer. These simple guidelines will show you how to trap a mole.
How to Trap a Mole
If there are many different tunnels to choose from you need to find a tunnel that the mole uses frequently. To do this you need to find a tunnel that the dirt doesn’t feel as hard as other tunnels. Use a hand shovel to slightly damage the tunnel. Slightly block the tunnel with dirt. If this is a tunnel that the mole uses frequently when the mole finds the damaged area of the tunnel the mole will fix it. Check the tunnel the next day. If the tunnel is fixed then you know it is a good spot for your trap.
Once you have found a great spot to put the trap, you need to dig it up again.
Dig into the tunnel and dig out enough dirt to make room for the trap. Lay the trap into the tunnel, and cover it back up with a board. Using a board makes sure that the tunnel does not collapse and the tunnel remains dark.
Check the tunnel every 6 hours to see if the mole has been caught. When the mole has been caught you need to dispose of the mole. Do not leave the mole in the ground to rot since animals may come and dig it up later causing more damage to your yard.
If you wish to catch a live mole you may need to work a little harder. Replace the trap with a coffee can. Dig into the tunnel, when you are at the tunnel dig a section deeper than the tunnel to fit the coffee can in. Try to make this hole as deep as you can. You may need to use a little bit of water to make the dirt easier to work with. And recover the tunnel with a board and some dirt so that no light can get in the tunnel.
When the mole is going through the tunnel it will fall into the deep hole and into the coffee can unable to get out. Check the coffee can trap every few hours.
Once you do capture the mole, you may choose to place the mole in its natural habitat. You need to take the mole at least 10 miles away from your home or it may find its way back into your yard.
Using these guidelines on how to trap a mole is the best way to trap and get rid of your lawn mole. No longer will you have the unsightly mole hills, the strange tunnels and the damage to your plants will come to an end.
